Halifax, Nova Scotia – July 17, 2026 – Four warships from NATO’s Standing NATO Maritime Group One (SNMG1) recently called at Halifax, Nova Scotia, underscoring the Alliance’s enduring transatlantic bonds and commitment to maritime security and interoperability.
The port visit served as a key milestone for the multinational task group. It featured the formal transfer of flagship responsibilities from the German Navy frigate FGS Sachsen to the Royal Canadian Navy frigate HMCS Ville de Québec, homeported in Halifax.
The SNMG1 group consisted of:
- BNS Leopold I (Belgium)
- HMCS Ville de Québec (Canada)
- FGS Sachsen (Germany)
- HNoMS Fridtjof Nansen (Norway)
Flagship Transition and Ceremonies
On July 10, 2026, while alongside in Halifax, FGS Sachsen hosted a Force Reception. SNMG1 Commander, Royal Navy Commodore Maryla Ingham, and the Commanding Officer of FGS Sachsen welcomed military leaders, civic representatives, and distinguished guests aboard to celebrate Allied partnership and NATO’s maritime security commitment.
A formal ceremony then took place in which the SNMG1 Commander’s flag was raised aboard HMCS Ville de Québec, officially transferring flagship duties. The UK-led battle staff, commanded by Commodore Ingham, embarked on the Canadian frigate to ensure seamless continuity of operations.
“We are delighted to strengthen our integration with the Canadians, with whom we share many bonds, both historically and through our membership of NATO. The seamless transition into a new Flagship is a testament to the interoperability of NATO Navies and the strength of the transatlantic relationship upon which NATO was founded.” — Commodore Maryla Ingham
Because Halifax is HMCS Ville de Québec’s home port, the visit held special meaning for the crew, who welcomed family members aboard ahead of a six-month deployment.
Operational Context
SNMG1 operates under Commander Task Force Atlantic (CTF Atlantic), the NATO command responsible for coordinating Allied maritime forces across the Atlantic. Spanish Vice Admiral Juan Bautista Pérez Puig assumed command of CTF Atlantic in July 2026, serving through June 30, 2027. The task force oversees both SNMG1 and Standing NATO Mine Countermeasures Group One, reflecting NATO’s focus on maritime security, Allied presence, and readiness along the northern flank.
This Halifax visit reinforces NATO’s collective commitment to maintaining a strong, ready, and interoperable maritime presence across the North Atlantic. The successful handover of flagship duties demonstrates the high level of trust and coordination among Allied navies.
