In a heartfelt tribute to three decades of service, Tool Shed Brewing Company has partnered with the Royal Canadian Navy’s HMCS Calgary to launch a special edition beer celebrating the ship’s 30th anniversary. Commissioned in 1995, HMCS Calgary, a Halifax-class frigate, has been a symbol of Canadian strength and pride, and this unique pilsner honors its legacy and the dedication of its crew—past, present, and future.
A Beer with Purpose
The special edition 4.5% ABV pilsner, crafted by Tool Shed Brewing, is more than just a refreshing drink—it’s a salute to the men and women who have served aboard HMCS Calgary. Available exclusively at Royal Canadian Legion locations across Calgary, the beer is also featured at the annual HMCS Calgary Barn Burner event on July 2, 2025. Proceeds from this limited release will support the Poppy Fund, providing vital assistance to Canadian veterans and their families. This initiative reflects Tool Shed’s commitment to honoring military service, inspired by co-founder Graham Sherman’s experience as a civilian contractor in Afghanistan supporting the Canadian Department of National Defence.
The Barn Burner: A Night of Celebration
The HMCS Calgary Barn Burner, set for July 2, 2025, at the ATCO Blue Flame Kitchen, promises to be a highlight of the city’s Stampede kickoff. Organized by Councillors Kourtney Penner, Gian-Carlo Carra, and the Friends of HMCS Calgary Committee, this family-friendly event will feature live music, delicious food, and the chance to mingle with HMCS Calgary’s crew members, including the Commanding Officer. The special edition beer will flow freely, offering attendees a taste of Calgary’s pride in its namesake ship. Tickets are available at gccarra.ca/barnburner, and with the event selling out annually, early booking is recommended.
