Québec City, QC – June 10, 2025 – The Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) will mark a significant milestone in its maritime legacy with the commissioning of His Majesty’s Canadian Ship (HMCS) Frédérick Rolette on June 13, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. at the Port of Québec, Pier 22. The ceremony, a time-honored naval tradition, will formally welcome the vessel into active service, strengthening Canada’s naval capabilities and honoring a storied historical figure.
The commissioning ceremony will be attended by distinguished guests, including the Ship’s Sponsor, Madame Hélène Châtillon, a descendant of Lieutenant Frédérick Rolette, after whom the ship is named. Members of the Châtillon family, senior naval officials, and media representatives will also be present to witness the event, which underscores the RCN’s commitment to maintaining a robust and modern fleet.
HMCS Frédérick Rolette is named in honor of Lieutenant Frédérick Rolette, a French-Canadian naval officer renowned for his bravery during the War of 1812. Rolette’s daring exploits, particularly his leadership in capturing American vessels on the Great Lakes, cemented his place in Canadian naval history. The ship bearing his name symbolizes the RCN’s dedication to preserving Canada’s maritime heritage while embracing cutting-edge technology to meet contemporary security challenges.
The commissioning of HMCS Frédérick Rolette aligns with Canada’s National Shipbuilding Strategy, which aims to revitalize the nation’s shipbuilding industry and ensure the RCN remains equipped to protect Canadian sovereignty and contribute to international operations. The vessel is expected to play a critical role in maritime security, supporting missions ranging from coastal defense to multinational exercises with allied navies.
“Commissioning a new ship is a proud moment for the Royal Canadian Navy and all Canadians,” said a Department of National Defence spokesperson. “HMCS Frédérick Rolette embodies our commitment to a strong, capable navy that honors our past while safeguarding our future.”
The ceremony will feature traditional naval protocols, including the raising of the Canadian Naval Ensign and the ship’s commissioning pennant, symbolizing the vessel’s official entry into service. Media representatives are invited to cover the event, with opportunities to capture this historic occasion at the picturesque Port of Québec.
