FREDERICK ROLETTE
HMCS Frederick Rolette (AOPV 434), the fifth Harry DeWolf-class Arctic and Offshore Patrol Vessel (AOPV), was built by Irving Shipbuilding at Halifax Shipyard as part of Canada's National Shipbuilding Strategy. Named after Lieutenant Frederick Rolette, a Canadian-born naval hero of the War of 1812 known for his bold actions, including the capture of the American vessel Cuyahoga Packet, the ship honors his legacy of courage and service.
Construction began with the first steel cut on May 20, 2021, followed by the keel laying on June 29, 2022. The vessel was launched on December 9, 2023, two months ahead of schedule, and delivered to the Royal Canadian Navy on August 29, 2024.
The ship was officially named on May 25, 2024, in a ceremony where Helene Chatillon, a descendant of Rolette, broke a bottle of Nova Scotia Brut sparkling wine against the bow. HMCS Frederick Rolette was commissioned into service on June 13, 2025, with Commander Jolene Lisi as its commanding officer, marked by a traditional ceremony including the presentation of the commissioning pennant. Designed for Arctic and coastal operations, the 103.6-meter vessel supports surveillance, humanitarian assistance, and disaster relief, with the capacity to carry a CH-148 Cyclone helicopter, small vehicles, and cargo. Its badge, featuring a sea-lion holding a sabre, reflects Rolette's tenacity and Quebec heritage.
