Halifax, Nova Scotia – April 22, 2025 – Today, His Majesty’s Canadian Ship (HMCS) Montréal departed its homeport of Halifax, Nova Scotia, embarking on a six-month deployment to support NATO’s Operation Reassurance in Central and Eastern Europe. The departure ceremony, held at HMCS Scotian, was attended by families, friends, and dignitaries, who gathered to bid farewell to the crew of approximately 240 sailors and aviators aboard the Halifax-class frigate.

Operation Reassurance is Canada’s contribution to NATO’s assurance and deterrence measures, aimed at promoting security and stability in European waters, particularly in response to regional tensions. HMCS Montréal, equipped with a CH-148 Cyclone maritime helicopter, will join Standing NATO Maritime Group Two (SNMG2) in the Mediterranean Sea, conducting surveillance, monitoring, and joint exercises with allied navies to enhance interoperability and readiness.

Commander Travis Bain, Commanding Officer of HMCS Montréal, addressed the crowd during the ceremony, expressing confidence in the crew’s preparedness. “The ship’s company has trained rigorously for this mission, and we are ready to represent Canada with professionalism and dedication,” he said. “I extend my deepest gratitude to our families, whose unwavering support makes this deployment possible.”

Rear-Admiral Josée Kurtz, Commander Maritime Forces Atlantic and Joint Task Force Atlantic, emphasized the significance of the mission. “HMCS Montréal’s deployment underscores Canada’s commitment to NATO and the rules-based international order,” she stated. “This mission will strengthen our alliances and contribute to peace and stability in a critical region.”

The departure marks HMCS Montréal’s return to Operation Reassurance, following its previous deployment in 2022. Since 2014, the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) has maintained a persistent presence in European waters, with Halifax-class frigates rotating through the mission to support NATO objectives. The ship’s activities will include patrolling key maritime routes, participating in multinational training exercises, and engaging in diplomatic efforts to bolster regional security.

As HMCS Montréal sailed from Halifax Harbour, families lined the waterfront, waving and offering final well-wishes. The deployment, expected to conclude in October 2025, will see the crew navigate diverse and challenging environments, from the North Atlantic to the Mediterranean, showcasing Canada’s naval capabilities and commitment to global security.

The RCN and the Canadian Armed Forces continue to play a vital role in international security, with HMCS Montréal’s mission reflecting Canada’s resolve to work alongside NATO allies in promoting a stable and secure Europe.
