"When an explosion resulting in the loss of his ship occurred, Leading Coder Petrie, O.N. V-4262, showed great courage and initiative in persuading a number of men to leave an overcrowded life raft and swim to another. By his action in being the first to leave, a number of lives were probably saved. The temperature of the water at the time was 37 degree F."
