"Petty Officer Thomas Shields was one of a party which succeeded in destroying five enemy laid moored mines off Kunsan West Korea on the 26th and 27th September 1950. Petty Officer Shields prepared the detonation charge necessary to effect the mines destruction, and then assisted in securing the charge to the mines. This work was carried out under difficult conditions with a fast tide running, making the management of the mines and their small boat uncertain during the critical operation of attaching the charge. In this operation, Petty Officer Shields displayed high personal courage and professional skills."
