Captain derives from the Latin caput, meaning "head". In the Navy, Captain is both a rank and an appointment. In the RCN, the commanding officer of a ship, may normally be the the rank of Commander, but is nevertheless referred to and addressed as Captain. The rank of Captain (N) is equivalent to the army's Colonel. The Navy Captain rank insignia consists of four standard bars, the topmost bar featuring an executive curl.
