The unit was originally the Shearwater Station Squadron Fleet Requirement Unit and was formed in May 1946. It was renamed VH-21 in November 1952 and became a separate squadron on May 2, 1954. Still operational, the squadron flies CT-133 Silver Star jets and CH-135 Twin Huey helicopters.
