This ship is named for the town of Sussex, New Brunswick. The badge design is based upon devices found in the arms of East and West Sussex, England, each of which displays a golden martlet, in one case on a red field, in the other on blue. This design combines both fields, and the boundary between them is made wavy in reference to the sea
Sussexvale was a River class frigate. She was commissioned in November 1944, and wore pennant K538 until she was paid off in November 1945. After undergoing conversion to a Prestonian class of ocean escort, she was recommissioned in January 1955. She wore pennant 313 until she was finally paid off in November 1966.
