(Glossary of Heraldic Terms)
In connection with the name Scotian it is fitting to use the Cross of St. Andrew as it appears in the Arms and flag of Nova Scotia. However, in order to show more clearly that the ship is Canadian, the saltire is marked at the centre with a roundel bearing an emblem of Canada, a red maple leaf upon heraldic water.
