(Glossary of Heraldic Terms)
The town of Sault Ste. Marie in Ontario is situated on the falls of the St. Mary River. The term sault is the old French version of saut, translated as "jump" or "leap." The vertical blue and white wavy bars indicate this change in elevation of the river. The fleur-de-lis and the celestial crown are devices associated with Sainte Marie.
Sault Ste. Marie was an Algerine class minesweeper. She was commissioned in June 1943, and wore pennant J334 until she was paid off. She was later recommissioned and wore pennant 176 until she was paid off in October 1958.
