Gules, the mask of a Raccoon, proper.
(Glossary of Heraldic Terms)
This badge design depicts the most familiar part of the Raccoon, that is the mask or black sections of the face. As well as being part of the overall camouflage scheme of the animal, its dark eyes are almost hidden completely by the surrounding black fur. The cunning, stealth and agility of this animal were the attributes which the badge design wished to convey.
Originally the American yacht Halonia, Raccoon was commissioned into the RCN in December 1940. She was paid off in September 1942.
