Significance

The badge is derived from the arms of the Spanish naval captain and explorer Juan Francisco de la Bodega y Quadra. He made two major voyagers of exploration to the Pacific Northwest and in 1792 was sent to Nootka Sound as Spanish envoy to arrange with Captain George Vancouver for the restoration of British properties seized by the Spaniards in 1789. Captain Vancouver honoured the envoy by naming the present-day Vancouver Island "the island of Quadra and Vancouver". The name of Quadra is a familiar one in coastal British Columbia. The badge of HMCS Quadra is a composite of the principal elements of the Quadra arms.
