(Glossary of Heraldic Terms)
This ship is one of the Porte class vessels which are named for gates in Canadian fortresses and walled cities. The Dauphine gate of Louisburg was the source for this badge. The Dauphin was the title held by the eldest son of the King of France, and is also translated as dolphin. The spelling here of Dauphine is a necessary gender agreement with Porte.
