(Glossary of Heraldic Terms)

Significance

The Nootka people were daring whale hunters, setting out in search of whales after ceremonial preparation, cleansing both the body and the spirit. Considering their small craft, the chase involved much hardship and demanded great courage. If necessary the hunters would jump onto the back of a whale attacking it with knives and spears. The killer whale in the badge is also a great hunter, who, like man, knows no natural enemies.
