(Glossary of Heraldic Terms)

Significance

This establishment commemorates HMC Schooner Naden, which was itself named after the Naden River, the largest river on Graham Island in the Queen Charlotte group. The word naden was used by the Raven Clan of the Haida. It comes from the Haida term "ne dan xada i" meaning Naden River People, a branch of the Ecetas, a family of the Haida Raven Clan.

Remarks

Originally the Hydrographic Survey Vessel CGS Naden, the sailing schooner became tender to the RN College of Canada from June 1918 to June 1920. By November 1922, the name found its way to the Naval Training Establishment in Esquimalt, BC. Here it remained until April 1966 when the forces unified, and Naden became part of CFB Esquimalt.
