(Glossary of Heraldic Terms)
This ship is named for the town of Perth, Lanark County, Ontario. Since there was a ship named Perth in the Royal Australian Navy, it was necessary to find some other suitable name for the Canadian frigate. The town council suggested the use of the county name. The ship's unofficial badge used a bull's head, and when official badges were instituted, it was felt that this device, representative of the civic crest of Perth and of the fine agricultural lands of Lanark, was appropriate. It is not intended lo represent any particular breed, but rather is a stylized heraldic type.
Lanark was a member of the River class of frigates, and was commissioned in July 1944. She wore pennant K669 until she was decommissioned in November 1945. She underwent the Prestonian conversion and was recommissioned in April 1956 and wore pennant 321 until she was paid off in March 1965.
