HMCS FORT STEELE Badge

Significance

Fort Steele, a former RCMP patrol vessel, was named after a gold rush boom town founded in 1864 by John Galbraith. Originally named "Galbraith's Ferry," the town was renamed Fort Steele in 1888, after legendary North-West Mounted Police Superintendent Sam Steele solved a dispute between a settler who had unjustly accused a First Nations man with murder. Sam Steele, finding no real evidence against the accused, had the charges lifted, making the town residents and First Nations people so grateful they renamed the town Fort Steele.
