(Glossary of Heraldic Terms)

Significance

This badge appropriately depicts the animal for which the ship was named. The caribou shown in the design was patterned after the one which appeared on the one cent postage stamp of Newfoundland. The design shows a fine male, well antlered in the pose of calling a challenge to another of the species. The blue background refers to the sea.

HMCS Caribou was the former American yacht Elfreda. She was commissioned into the RCN in May 1940, and wore pennants S12 and 225 until she was paid off in July 1945.
