Sable, a blue heron in its vigilance proper, standing in a base of heraldic water, barry wavy of six argent and azure.
(Glossary of Heraldic Terms)
In heraldry, the heron and the crane are often depicted standing on one foot, while with the other it holds a stone. The fable from which this symbol originates suggests that should the bird fall asleep, it would drop the stone and awaken itself. This naturally leads to the term — “In its vigilance” — an appropriate symbol for one of HMC ships.
Blue Heron was a member of the Bird class of patrol boat. She was built in Orillia, Ontario and commissioned in May 1956. She wore pennant 782 until she was paid off into reserve in November 1956. After having served as a Reserve and Cadet training vessel, she went on loan to the RCMP from 1957 to 1968, when she was finally paid off.
