Significance

The Second World War unofficial badge was of such excellence of design and appropriateness in suggesting anti-submarine activity that the design was accepted as the official badge.

Remarks

There have been two ships named Algonquin. The first, pennant number R17, was the ex-RN destroyer HMS Valentine, transferred to the RCN in February 1944. She was paid off into reserve in February 1946. After modernization in 1953, she served until finally paid off in April 1970. During this time she wore pennant 224. Algonquin (II) was a Tribal class destroyer. She was commissioned in November 1973, and wore pennant 283 until being paid off in 2015.
