Significance

The Micmac are one of the largest indigenous groups that tradional lived in the north-eastern part of the continent. Their legendary chief, named Glooscap, defeated his evil twin brother in combat with a fem. As a prophet of the Great Spirit, the Micmacs believed that he was responsible for many of the blessings and successes that came their way in peace and in battle, just as he had been successful himself in his struggle with evil. As a device for the badge of HMCS Micmac, the fern symbolizes that although a weapon may be fragile, a just cause may not require might.
