Significance

This ship commemorates the ability, skill and daring of the earliest sailors of the Atlantic - the Vikings. In little more than a large canoe they were able to withstand the most distasteful of weather and were known to have crossed the Atlantic Ocean to Newfoundland 500 years before Columbus. In addition the Vikings were feared for their ferocity as warriors - in early days "viking" and "warrior" were synonymous.
