(Glossary of Heraldic Terms)

Significance

The rainbow trout was selected for the main device of this badge not only because of the appropriateness of the name but also because this species of freshwater fish is indigenous to Canadian waters.

Remarks

Rainbow (I) was the first unit to be commissioned into the RCN. One of a class of Protected cruisers, she was commissioned on August 4, 1910 and served on Canada's west coast until she paid off on May 8, 1917. However, she was recommissioned on July 5, 1917, and served as a depot ship until she was paid off on June 1, 1920. Rainbow (II) was originally the submarine USS Argonaut, and she commissioned into the RCN on December 2, 1968. Wearing pennant 75 she was stationed on Canada's west coast until pay-off on December 31, 1974.
