HMCS JONQUIERE Badge

(Glossary of Heraldic Terms)

Significance

This device is modeled on the arms of Jacques-Pierre de Taffanel, Marquis de la Jonquiere (1680-1752) in whose honour the town of Jonquiere in Quebec is named. The Jonquiere Arms display six mountain peaks issuing from the base, and above the central and highest peak a white ring or annulet. In this badge the three chevronels symbolize the mountain peaks; the anchor demonstrates Jonquiere's considerable achievements as a naval officer, and the gold fleur-de-lis refers to his position as Governor of New France.

Remarks

Jonquiere was a member of the 1942-1943 River class frigate programme. She was commissioned in May 1944, and wore pennant 1<318 until she paid off into refit. After her conversion to a Prestonian class ocean escort, she wore pennant 318 until she was finally paid off in June 1958.
