Significance

Grilse is a term which, though of unknown origin, is applied to young salmon on their first return from the sea. Originally a term used in respect of the Atlantic salmon, it is now applied to the Pacific salmon as well. Ounce for ounce, these fish have got more fight than most other freshwater fish. They ran be distinguished from salmon by their more forked tail. more slender hody, thinner scales and more numerous spots. This badge depicts these qualities in a clean, smooth-flowing design which is quite distinctive from fish lorms used in other badges.

Remarks

Grilse (I) was originally the US yacht Winchester. Commissioned in July 1915 as a torpedo boat, she was paid off in December 1918. Grilse (II) was originally the submarine, USS Argonaut. Commissioned in December 1968, she wore pennant 71 until she paid off in December 1974.
